I really liked this blog post from Seth Godin. Typically using as few words as possible to make as much impact as is required
Is something important because you measure it, or is it measured because it's important?
Does our new ability to see things with web data make the previously overlooked now visible, or are we giving weight to things merely because we've measured them?
In the style of Seth I won't go into a massive one about how data from the Top 40 can have a negative impact on ones enjoyment of music because I'm sure someone, somewhere, will tell me that they would never have got to hear 'that track' had it not been measured on a scale of 1-40. I can't even imagine life before the chart began back in 1952. Would Elvis, The Beatles, U2 and Gaga have enjoyed the same success?
