5 things I liked this week - 25/03/11

1. Google Goes Gaga - I unashamedly love Gaga. It's got nothing to do with the music, though she is a brilliant pop star. I just think she is as close to Bowie as we are going to get these day. Truely creative, she's got a story and she embraces the tools and the tech.

2. Junkyard Jumbotron - The Junkyard Jumbotron lets you take a bunch of random displays and instantly stitch them together into a large, virtual display, simply by taking a photograph of them.

3. Think Quarterly - A nice online mag from Google about data featuring some big thinkers.

4. Documentcloud - Wow. This would have been really been useful over at The Guardian when they tackled MPs expenses. This service allows you to scan documents and then collect data from the scanned text.

5. Dan Gilbert on Global Warming - A brilliant 10 minute talk giving 5 reasons why no one to give a toss about climate

5 things I liked this week - 18/03/11

I took this photo on the last day of SXSW as all the bands rolled into town. I love it. It's the moment the word 'smartphone' became a verb.

1. YoutubeMasher - Quite literally minutes of fun to be had with this. Give it a go and if you've got the patience make some loops using Youtube clips

2. British Institutions : The BBC - Great article on the BBC in the FT

3. IAmNotAnArtist - Rethinking Deadness via animated gifs. Loving the current love of the animated gif. Expect to see some fun with them at Radio 1 soon. Or maybe not.

4. Netflix gets into TV - An interesting time in the world of TV when a video streaming site outbids HBO for a series

5. 7 Einstein Classics - As ever a brilliant summary of literature to add to your collection from Maria Popova

5 things i liked this week - 11/03/11

1. Socialbrand100.com - OK, I like this because Radio 1 is number 12 in this world ranking. Not bad. I'm pretty proud of this ranking. We've dome some great stuff using social media in the last couple of years and this placing shows that all the innovation is paying off.

2. Fight 8-track piracy with this 1976 record sleeve - Rumours of the death of music were greatly exaggerated in 1976. The debate has been alive since the invention of the phonograph was going to bring an end to social singing such as choirs.

3. Memolane.com - All your social media on a timeline.Not quite sure how useful it is but I like it.

4. Printstagr.am - Print out your Instagram snaps as a poster or sticker set.

5. Screen Ification - Russel Davies, David Bowie, The Man Who Fell To Earth and lots and lots of screens.

 

 

5 Things I liked this week - 04/03/11

1. Light Painting With WIFI - Nice art project that lightpaints signals of WIFI strength using long exposure photography.

2. Seth Godin asks 'What books have I missed?' - With National book day upon us this is a great conversation on TED for anyone in need of some inspiration.

3. It'll never work - Great set of quotes from history telling us 'It'll never work' e.g. "Computers in the future may perhaps only weight 1.5 tons" Popular Mechanics 1949

4. Seeyourimpact.org - Absolutely love this. Having taken part in The Great Football Giveaway in November then recently visiting an orphange in Thailand I've been sponsoring there is no better feeling than seeing the impact of charitable donations in action.

5. Idea Connection: Trigger Ideas and Metaphors - Some decent reading on the creative process

 

5 Things I liked this week - 25/02/11

1. Story Building vs Story Telling - Really interesting article on how the internet and social media is allowing us to build stories in real-time.

2. The Say100 - 10 experts in 10 fields pick 10 people working in that field that you should be following. Some serious brainfood on offer. Let me warn you though, this kept me up very late on Tuesday night.

3. Gum Election - A guerrilla art project from New York that help keep gum off the sidewalk. Ludicrous and brilliant in equal measures.

4. Advertising as Data Packets - Interesting post from Google's Tom Uglow who has done some brilliant stuff around the principle that good advertising is the product.

5. Libyan revoloutionaries use dating sites to dodge secret police - An interesting twist in the use of social media to organise revolt against Gaddafi.

1. How the internet gets inside us - A really interesting article from the New Yorker on the 'Never Betters' and the 'Better Nevers'. We all know that I sit on the Never Better side of the fence.

2. The Return of the Lost Sock - I really wish I had a teacher like Stefan Sagmeister when I was at college. I would never have given up art.

3. Pepsi's bet on community projects over the Super Bowl - Pepsi shift their Super Bowl focus to community in an attempt to drive 'brand health' rather than sales.

4. Google Art Project - Explore museums around the world

5. Street Art Locator - Browse street art around the world via a map

5 Things I liked this week - 11/02/11

1. Twitter powered Scalextric with Scott Mills - This time we used 2 cars and got a bigger track. Ashton Kutcher and The Hoff got involved.

2. How Xerox invented the information age and gave it away - This is the amazing story of how on a visit to Xerox Steve Jobs and Bill gates stumbled across something interesting in the R&D department that would change our lives for ever.

3. Erase and Rewind - Why the BBC should not be binning all the websites that are no longer being updated.

4. You. Me. Us. - A different way of curating content than slapping 5 links in a blog post every Friday. This introduced me to Amy Krouse Rosenthal who does interesting things.

5. The Power and Perils of Participation - I found this in amongst some greater debate on audience participation.

5 things I liked this week - 04/02/11

 

1. Francis Ford Coppola on Risk, Money, Craft and Collaboration - A must read for anyone with a creative itch that needs scratching. Some great advice from a man who has always done things his own way.

2. What you need to know about working with designers - A nice article from Fast Company on how to get across your ideas without driving designers crazy.

3. There's a Tiny Pony in the Apple Store - The brilliant Toby Barnes talks at Interesting North about Modernism and ask the question 'Why have we become so acclimatised to the exceptional? Really looking forward to diving into the rest of the collection.

4. If It Were My Home - Read any book on the subject of happiness and you will at some point be told that one of the keys for unlocking it is appreciation. This tool tells you how different your life would be if you were born somewhere else. Reminds me a little bit of Poke's excellent Global Rich List. Give them both a quick spin.

5. Press, Pause, Play - A film about hope, fear and digital culture. Looks good. some great videos and quotes on the site.

Liked this deck on storytelling in marketing

1. Marc Maron's WTF podcast with Ira Glass - Brilliant podcast in which two storytelling styles collide as the sweary Marc Maron interviews This American Life's awesome Ira Glass.

2. Why thinking in the shower may be the perfect plsace for the 'creative pause' - It doesn't have to be in the shower, it could be just going for a walk. Repetitive actions and a white noise soundtrack can stimulate your creativity.

3. Untangling the Web by Aleks Krotoski - Aleks is one of my favourite journalists and broadcasters whose new project for the Guardian is a great example of how to engage your audience, use networked tools to build a story and show your working out as part of the process. Journalists and broadcasters take note.

4. Using Google Translate to beatbox - Really silly but I love it when people find new uses for tools.

5. Radio Presenters get tested for AIDS live on air for World Aids Day - Brave, bold and dangerous... What a brilliant simple idea for catching the attention of a nation.

1. How Twitter users balanced the budget - crowdsourcing and infographics from the New York Times

2. Nesta's paper on Serious Games - Pretty compehensive coverage on a hot topic

3. All Day by Girl Talk Mash Up Break Down - Data driven visualisation of the latest album by Girl Talk. We've recently been looking for a soloution to how we visualise Annie Mac's Mini Mix

4. Can 'Double Screening' hinder producers - The Guardian questions the effect of SM on the media. Will TV suffer the 'faster horses' effect?

5. Where do ideas come from - I don't necessarily agree with all of Seth's list but do like 'Ideas come from our ego, and they do their best when they're generous and selfless'

Simon Pegg's Nerd Do Well graphic novel/autobiography iphone app - this looks promising. I'll have a play with it on the train
